Amidst historic downtown Carlisle, the Carlisle Theatre retains the plush decadence of an old time movie theater. Built in 1939 then closed in 1986, the Theatre was restored by volunteers to its original Art Deco style in 1993 and has since become a cultural force in the city. While screenings are no longer 25 cents a pop, the Theatre shows typically one or two independent or vintage films a week usually at 7:30 p.m. or 2 p.m. Generous sponsors often rent the space and offer special film screenings. In addition, the Theatre hosts the resident Carlisle Theatre Company, which performs four family-friendly shows per season. The group brings Broadway plays such as Annie and Guys and Dolls to Central Pennsylvania. Local and national musicians also grace the stage for uniquely luxurious nights of live music. Check the website for upcoming performances.
